Judith Brand created this marvellous crochet beanie hat with musical notation in mind and even managed to recreate some of them with crochet stitches. The hat is formed with columns of stitches in a > shape, which correlates to the musical notation for "decrescendo", meaning a gradual lessening in volume. A super fun and quick project that you'll have off your hook before you can exclaim "allegro". The perfect gift for a music loving friend!

This hand-knit design for a bold pair of colourwork mittens was created by Astrid Colding Siversten using inspiration from a family of small-repeat patterns that are traditional in western Denmark. Starting with corrugated ribbing at the cuffs, the fabric morphs into colourwork that plays with colour dominance and balance, mimicking the four voices in a type of vocal composition called a "Madrigal".

Cleo Malone designed this meditative cardigan to embrace the contemplative side of knitting. The squishy, two-colour patterning highlights the rhythmic textures of brioche stitch whilst the simple colour blocking adds intensity to the visual soundscape of this project. This cardigan has classic, easy shaping with an open front that is ideal for those moods when you want to get lost in the comforting rhythm of a continuous stitch worked back and forth. Sample shown in Malabrigo Rios shades Sand Bank, Melon and Syrah Grapes.

For this statement sweater design, Johanna Kunin took inspiration from a piano piece by the composer Frederic Chopin where three notes must be played with one hand in the time that it takes to play four with the other. The uneven sequence of colourwork blocks and melding of black and white throughout represent the polyrhythm formed that is now a staple in modern music from jazz to songs sung by Britney Spears. Knitted from the bottom up in the round with raglan sleeves, stranded colourwork and folded neck.

Inspired by the rhythms played through long wooden horns in Ukraine's Carpathian mountains by farmers communicating across valleys and long distances, Tetyana Vyazovska designed these layered mittens. The triangles echoing across the geometric design use the Roositud technique, a tradition Estonian method of wrapping columns of stitches which allows for colourwork to be formed without carrying yarn across the fabric.

Nidhi Kansal describes her design, Wavetable, as her interpretation of the ebb and flow of music. The columns of twisted rib extend up the body and sleeves to form an arc like that of a soundwave. Worked from the bottom up in the round, this glorious jumper is worked in a lightweight and rustic Shetland-style, fingering weight yarn that encourages the textures to sing.
